Homework has proven to be a valuable reinforcement of learning. It is an important part of helping our students excel academically. Homework assignments should use well-understood skills. Homework is NOT to teach, it is to develop learning habits and provide reinforcement. As an institution that encourages family time as well as school time, CCA wants to make homework a meaningful activity with a realistic amount of time spent, that teaches the student responsibility, yet is not intrusive on family time. Recognizing that what takes one child ten minutes may take another thirty, it is critical that there is communication with parents so adjustments can be made when needed. As a general rule it is expected that all students will have homework each day with more depth and frequency in the higher grades. Various guidelines have been suggested by numerous schools with a common rule-of-thumb being ten minutes per night times the grade level of the child. Each classroom teacher will establish their own specific guidelines within this general framework as well as clearly making known the specific consequences of homework not being handed in on time. The Head of School is in regular communication with parents to ensure the amount of homework provides the right balance between academic requirements and family time.
We believe that small class size is one of the fundamental things that makes our school unique and great. Smaller classes allow teachers more time for each student. As our school grows, small class size will remain a priority, and we will add additional teachers as necessary to keep our student/teacher ratio low.
